3+ (EP)

Mike Barnett originally envisioned his 2020 release, +1, as a purely duets project. But there were several songs and tunes that he knew would also hold up to a full band approach. On this special EP edition, Barnett thoughtfully rounds out 3 of the tracks with the addition of some of his favorite musicians, including Punch Brothers Noam Pikelny on banjo, Chris Eldridge on guitar, and Paul Kowert on bass. In Barnett's tongue-in-cheek view: "Not your typical pick-up band, but I guess it’ll do."

The track, "Born To Be With You," is transformed into a bluegrass barn-burner with the contributions of Pikelny's unparalleled banjo chops alongside Barnett's and Molly Tuttle's duet vocals. “Anna Marie” is the EP’s most delicate track with Sierra Hull’s graceful mandolin and crystalline vocals adding emotional depth to Barnett’s gorgeous melody. And the track “Hollow City,” featuring Sarah Jarosz on lead vocals and Billy Contreras on twin fiddle, is absolutely sublime and a personal favorite of Barnett’s.

Since suffering a brain hemorrhage in 2020, Barnett has not been able to return to playing the fiddle. But, in the meantime, it's a true gift to music fans to be able to hear his musical vision realized through these expanded versions of tracks from his critically acclaimed duets project, +1.
