Description

Originally released on Coffeehouse Extemporé Records in 1983 and long out of print, One Night is a rare and historically important document of Greg Brown’s early career. It was the second of only three recordings issued by the legendary Minneapolis venue during its 22-year existence, placing the album at a fascinating point in Brown’s development as a songwriter and performer. Chronologically, it falls between 1981’s The Iowa Waltz and 1985’s In the Dark with You and captures Brown during the formative years when his distinctive voice and storytelling style were beginning to emerge.

Because of its limited original release, One Night became one of the rarest and most sought-after recordings in Greg Brown’s catalog. The album preserves the intimacy and spontaneity of an early live performance, offering a glimpse of Brown as he was heard by audiences in the Minneapolis folk and coffeehouse scene before he became a nationally recognized songwriter.

Among its 16 tracks are several Brown classics, including “Ella Mae,” “You Don’t Really Get Me, Babe,” and “Dream On”—songs that were favorites of his early audiences but were never recorded in another setting. These performances are especially valuable because they document an important chapter of Brown’s songwriting history, before many of his songs would find their way onto later studio albums or into the repertoires of other artists.

The collection also includes five additional recordings that were left off the original LP because of the time limitations of the vinyl format. Their inclusion makes this edition an even more complete portrait of Brown’s early work, preserving songs and performances that might otherwise have disappeared into obscurity.

More than simply an archival release, One Night offers a snapshot of Greg Brown finding his voice: intimate, unpolished, funny, deeply observant, and already displaying the lyrical depth that would define his career. For longtime fans, it is a rare piece of Brown’s musical history; for newcomers, it provides an invaluable window into the beginnings of one of contemporary folk’s most enduring songwriting careers.
