Description

Released in 1990, Down in There is one of Greg Brown's defining early albums, blending folk, country, blues, and rockabilly influences with his vivid storytelling and unmistakable baritone. Featuring standout songs such as "If I Had Known," "All Day Rain," and "Poor Backslider," the album moves effortlessly from tales of "poor backsliders in the pit of sin" to portraits of dreamers, small-town life, and rural landscapes, reflecting Brown's gift for finding poetry in everyday experience.

Produced by Greg Brown and Bo Ramsey, Down in There pairs Brown's acoustic guitar and vocals with a distinguished ensemble that includes Bo Ramsey (guitar, background vocals), Bill Cagley (banjo), Al Murphy (fiddle), Radoslav Lorković (piano and accordion), Angus Foster (bass), Steve Hayes (drums), and Shawn Colvin on background vocals. The understated arrangements provide a rich backdrop for Brown's songwriting while allowing each song's emotional core to shine.

Jason Ankeny praised Brown as "an able songwriter as well as a singer," noting that while much of the album leans toward spare folk and country balladry, songs such as "Poor Backslider" embrace a Southern rock groove and "If I Had Known" rolls along with an old-fashioned rockabilly shuffle. Together, the varied musical styles complement Brown's weathered voice and reinforce the album's reputation as one of the strongest examples of his early work.
