A Southern Celtic Christmas celebrates in music, dance, poetry, song, and story the high spirits and mystical beauty of the Celtic and Appalachian Christmas traditions. Featured artists include three GRAMMY Award winners: “First Lady of Celtic Song” Moya Brennan; Celtic and bluegrass banjo virtuoso Alison Brown; and Riverdance composer Bill Whelan. Other crowd-pleasing performers include Rising Appalachia, a dynamic duo winning applause with their soulful harmonies and innovative interpretations of traditional Southern music; madcap string player and percussionist Joe Craven; renowned Irish balladeer John Doyle; and master of the uillean pipes, John Maschinot. The program also features the work of, and a rare interview with, the late Seamus Heaney, the Nobel prize-winning Irish poet.

Shepherding us on this journey is noted Yeats scholar and director, Irish storyteller and singer James Flannery.

Through magical performances and informative interviews, these artists share with us their stories, their insights, and their own vast understanding of the musical, cultural, and spiritual connections between the Celtic lands and the American South. A family entertainment for audiences of all ages, A Southern Celtic Christmas is both a celebration and a reflection–a fun-filled yet inspirational way of finding yourself once again at home with the true meaning of Christmas.
