Produced by Greg Brown and Bo Ramsey, The Poet Game finds Brown taking an honest, unsettling, and often entertaining look at what he called the "Big Three" of human experience—sensuality, mortality, and spirituality. Often regarded as one of the landmark albums of his career, the record expands beyond the boundaries of traditional folk, pairing Brown's introspective songwriting with understated production that allows its emotional and philosophical themes to take center stage. The album includes one of Brown's signature songs, "Driftless."
Critics praised the album's lyrical depth and stripped-back approach. AllMusic reviewer Richard Meyer described The Poet Game as "somber and streetwise," noting its stronger political undertones compared with Brown's earlier work. While he suggested that some of the instrumental arrangements could have been more fully developed, Meyer concluded that the album remained "a fine stripped-to-the-bone songwriter album by one of the premier contemporary writers." Music critic Robert Christgau, meanwhile, assigned the album a "Neither" rating.
