Inspired in part by Greg Brown’s travels through Europe, this album captures the songwriter expanding his musical and lyrical horizons while remaining firmly rooted in his intimate, observational style. Among its standout tracks is “One Cool Remove,” a reflective Brown original later recorded by Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter, helping introduce his songwriting to an even wider audience.
The album is also significant as the beginning of Brown’s long and influential creative partnership with guitarist and producer Bo Ramsey. Their collaboration would become one of the defining relationships of Brown’s career, with Ramsey helping Brown discover a more relaxed and spontaneous approach to recording. Looking back on their work together, Brown recalled that Ramsey “taught me to enjoy the studio,” describing their sessions as largely live performances shaped by an atmosphere that was both relaxed and thoughtful.
That philosophy is evident throughout the record. Brown’s warm, weathered vocals and acoustic guitar sit naturally alongside Ramsey’s understated electric guitar and harmonies, while saxophone, keyboards, bass, and drums broaden the arrangements without overwhelming the songs. The result is an early glimpse of the sound that would develop throughout Brown and Ramsey’s subsequent collaborations: conversational songwriting, rootsy musicianship, and arrangements that leave plenty of room for the emotional weight of the lyrics.
