Description

This 2-disc collection captures Greg Brown at the beloved Kate Wolf Music Festival across seven years of performances, from his first appearance in 1997 through 2003. Subtitled Live from the Kate Wolf Music Festival 1997–2003, the collection brings together some of Brown’s most memorable live performances, including eight previously unreleased recordings drawn from the festival’s annual gatherings.

Recorded in the intimate, communal atmosphere of the festival, these performances showcase the qualities that have made Brown such a revered live performer: his deep, weathered voice, understated guitar playing, conversational storytelling, dry humor, and remarkable ability to make a large audience feel as though he is singing directly to each listener. Rather than relying on elaborate production, the recordings keep the focus on Brown and the songs, preserving the spontaneity and warmth of the live setting.

The collection also captures Brown in conversation with fellow musicians and longtime friends. Guests include acclaimed guitarist Nina Gerber, Shawn Colvin, and Garnet Rogers, with additional contributions from Bill Griffin, Dave Moore, and Karen Savoca. Their appearances add new dimensions to Brown’s songs while reflecting the collaborative spirit that has always been central to the folk festival tradition.

The album spans an important period in Brown’s career, offering a portrait of an artist whose songwriting continued to deepen and evolve while remaining rooted in the American folk, blues, country, and gospel traditions. Across the two discs, Brown moves effortlessly between intimate ballads, humorous observations, and songs that explore love, friendship, loss, dreams, and the American landscape.

All proceeds from the release were donated to charity, making the collection not only a celebration of Brown’s long relationship with the Kate Wolf Music Festival but also a fitting expression of the community-minded spirit at the heart of the event.
