In The Dark With You

One of Greg Brown’s best-loved early albums, this recording captures the distinctive songwriting voice and understated roots sound that would become hallmarks of his career. Blending folk, blues, country, and intimate storytelling, Brown brings his characteristic warmth, wit, and plainspoken honesty to songs such as “Who Woulda Thunk It” and “Just a Bum.”

The album was made with a small ensemble that gives the songs an intimate, organic feel. Brown’s vocals and guitar remain at the center, surrounded by the earthy textures of bass, mandolin, violin, harmonica, accordion, pan pipes, conga, and subtle background vocals. Rather than overwhelming the songwriting with elaborate production, Greg Brown and Bob Feldman kept the arrangements focused and allowed the musicians to bring their own character to the performances. Produced by Brown and Feldman and engineered and mixed by Tom Mudge and Tom Tucker, the recording preserves the immediacy and warmth of Brown’s early performances.
