Description

One More Goodnight Kiss, released in 1988, captures Greg Brown during the early A Prairie Home Companion era, when his reputation as an observant and deeply personal songwriter was beginning to take shape. Filled with memories of childhood—its dreams, adventures, uncertainties, and small-town characters—the album finds Brown turning ordinary recollections into vivid, emotionally resonant stories.

The record includes several enduring Brown songs, including “The Cheapest Kind,” “Speedtrap Boogie,” and “Canned Goods,” one of his best-known early compositions. “Canned Goods,” a tender meditation on family, memory, and the passing of generations, was dedicated to Brown’s grandmother and has remained a beloved example of his ability to find profound emotion in everyday details.

Writing for AllMusic, critic Vik Iyengar called One More Goodnight Kiss Brown’s “first classic,” praising the way his keen observational eye and acoustic guitar conjure vivid images of his childhood. The album offers an especially revealing look at the roots of Brown’s songwriting: intimate, humorous, nostalgic, and occasionally bittersweet, with a storyteller’s instinct for the details that make a memory come alive.

Though centered on Brown’s voice and guitar, the arrangements are enriched by an impressive group of musicians. Peter Ostroushko’s violin, Marc Anderson’s percussion, Pat Donohue and Dan Lund’s guitars, Radoslav Lorković’s keyboards, and Steve Pikal’s trombone add color and movement while preserving the homespun character of the songs. The result is an album that feels both intimate and expansive—a defining early statement from an artist who would become one of contemporary folk’s most enduring songwriters.
