If I Had Known: Essential Recordings, 1980–1996 offers a wide-ranging retrospective of Greg Brown’s career, bringing together timeless songs from his earliest recordings through the critically acclaimed Further In (1996). Spanning more than 70 minutes, the collection traces Brown’s evolution as a songwriter and performer, showcasing the distinctive voice, storytelling, humor, and roots-oriented sound that established him as one of contemporary folk music’s most enduring artists.
The tracks have been remastered from the original master tapes, offering fresh sound while preserving the character of Brown’s classic recordings. The collection provides an accessible introduction to his work as well as a rewarding overview for longtime fans, highlighting the musical and lyrical development that unfolded across more than a decade.
The retrospective also includes a limited-edition DVD, Hacklebarney Tunes: The Music of Greg Brown, a 45-minute documentary originally produced in 1993. Featuring interviews, intimate jams, and concert footage filmed during the same period represented on the CD, the documentary offers a rare glimpse into Brown’s life, creative process, and distinctive approach to songwriting and performance. Together, the CD and DVD create a portrait of an artist whose music is deeply rooted in the American folk tradition while remaining personal, witty, and unmistakably his own.
