Covenant

Covenant is a cohesive collection of love songs—love lost, love found, love fleeting, and love enduring. Released in 2000, only a few months after Over and Under, the album finds Greg Brown drawing on the same weathered wisdom that shaped Further In (1996) and Slant 6 Mind (1997), but with a greater sense of faith, hope, and generosity. Less bucolic than some of his earlier work, Covenant presents Brown as a seasoned songwriter reflecting on love, friendship, dreams, loss, and the American experience.

Wielding both acoustic and electric guitar, Brown moves effortlessly between tenderness and grit, his grizzled baritone carrying songs rooted in the traditions of blues, country, rock, jazz, and gospel. Producer Bo Ramsey keeps the arrangements understated and Brown's voice front and center, allowing the strength of the songwriting to take precedence. Standouts include “‘Cept You and Me, Babe” and “Rexroth’s Daughter,” the latter later covered by Joan Baez on Dark Chords on a Big Guitar. The album also features the hidden track “Marriage Chant,” appearing after the official closing of the record.

Critics praised Brown’s continued growth as a songwriter. AllMusic’s Jeff Burger called him “a national treasure,” noting that his songwriting had progressed from “great to better” and praising the album’s simple production and intimate focus. No Depression likewise recognized Brown as an artist still operating at the height of his powers. Covenant captures an artist deeply grounded in American roots music while continuing to find new emotional territory within it.
