Description

Released in 1993 on Red House Records, Bathtub Blues (also released as Bath Tub Blues) is Greg Brown's family-oriented folk album, created for listeners of all ages. Dedicated to his three daughters—whom Brown jokingly thanked for patiently "waiting for their dad to grow up"—the 16-song collection alternates between the perspectives of children and adults, capturing the wonder, humor, and tenderness of everyday family life. Through warm acoustic arrangements, Brown's distinctive vocals, and occasional children's choruses, the album offers comforting bedtime songs, playful sing-alongs, and gentle reflections that resonate with both young listeners and adults.

The title track, "Bathtub Blues," humorously follows a child's imaginative adventures in the bathtub, while songs such as "So Long, You Old Tooth" celebrate childhood milestones with wit and charm. The album also features Brown's interpretations of traditional favorites, including "I See the Moon" and "Two Little Boys," alongside Elizabeth Cotten's classic "Shake Sugaree." Whether viewed through a child's eyes or an adult's, the songs balance innocence with insight, creating an intimate collection of folk and blues that celebrates family, imagination, and the simple joys of growing up.
