Award-winning singer-songwriter-guitarist Molly Tuttle’s 2020 album, …but i’d rather be with you, is now available in Limited Edition Translucent Pink Vinyl.
Originally released in August 2020 to worldwide critical applause, …but i’d rather be with you collects 10 striking cover songs recorded during Covid quarantine and produced with the help of Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers, Andrew Bird). Among its many riches, the album includes renditions of The National’s epic “Fake Empire,” Rancid’s “Olympia, WA,” The Rolling Stones’ “She’s A Rainbow,” FKA twigs’ “Mirrored Heart,” and the Grateful Dead favorite, “Standing On The Moon,”—all joined by official companion videos streaming now via YouTube.
PRAISE FOR …but i’d rather be with you:
[Re “Fake Empire”] “Replacing the original’s insistent low-end piano rumble with rhythmically complex strums of acoustic guitar and waves of droning feedback, Tuttle still captures the grown-up anxiety and denial that the National put forth in their recording from 2007’s Boxer.” —ROLLING STONE
“… handsomely crafted melodies that gently insinuate themselves into the memory...” —NPR
“…but i’d rather be with you has a smooth, folk-pop flow that keeps the emphasis on Tuttle’s gentle voice, which offers reassurance on even the darkest tunes…It will be interesting to see how this diverse array of sometimes unlikely cover songs influences her own work. If she recaptures the tender spirit and easy charm of …but i’d rather be with you, expect something special.” —NO DEPRESSION
“An album as reassuring as it is plaintive and moving…Tuttle’s take on Karen Dalton’s sad-eyed classic ‘Something On Your Mind’ is simply beautiful, while her reimagining of the Stones’ ersatz ode to a flower child, ‘She’s a Rainbow,’ as an earthy country ballad is an improvement on the original.” —THE TIMES (4/5)
“Bright and engaging…a collection of cover songs that showcases both (Tuttle’s) chops and her eclectic tastes.” —ALLMUSIC
“A helpful guide to explore other artists as well as a glimpse into Tuttle’s wildly diverse inspirations…Tuttle’s supple voice, nimble award winning guitar chops and obvious love for the material carries these versions.” —AMERICAN SONGWRITER (4/5)
“This inventive collection of songs crosses genres and decades, all cohesively tied by Tuttle’s clear voice, astonishing range, and stellar guitar playing…Tuttle’s intent was to bring us some joy and the album does brim with that kind of vibe.” —GLIDE MAGAZINE
“A lovely, low-key, in mate affair…These songs can break your heart into bloom.” —POPMATTERS
“A small masterpiece that allows Tuttle to stretch out, to explore various musical directions, and to dwell in these songs and make them her own……but i’d rather be with you illustrates Molly Tuttle’s exceptional musical intuition and creativity and her ability to know exactly how to bring out the essence of a song.” —FOLKALLEY.com
